Ask KLIM - I Would Like To Run a Turbo On My Sled But I Worry About Dependability.
Question: I would like to run a turbo on my sled but I worry about dependability. My riding time is hard to come by and I don't want to spend it trying to get my sled to run. I know you guys run turbos on many of your sleds. What is your experience.
Answer: I feel your pain. There is nothing worse then having a sled that is unreliable or inconsistent, unless it's having a buddy who's always got the hood and panels open. At the same time, there is nothing as fun or exciting as having a great running turbo ripping your hands off the bars all day. I have spent days, months, and even complete seasons fighting issues of inconsistency on turbo sleds. However, since 2011 things seemed to have changed for me. With the right turbo kit, a proper install, and some very basic maintenance my turbo sleds have ran day in and day out with almost zero issues of consistency. I have been able to set up my fueling and clutching per the manufactures recommendations and let them rip. I just returned from a trip to Revelstoke which is at an elevations several thousand feet lower then the areas I normally ride. I never had to touch my control box or my clutching and it ripped the whole time. I know lots of guys who are having this same experience. A couple things to keep in mind. Do your research and buy the right kit. You don't have to look very hard to find out what kits work and what kits don't. This may cost you more in the beginning but it will be worth it in the long run. Hire the right builder to do your install, if you do it yourself, take your time and do it right. IMO the number one reason guys struggle with poor consistency is poor installs. Be careful about what you read online. If you buy the right kit and hire the right builder you should have all the support you need if for some reason you do have trouble. If you run good fuel and look things over after every ride, just like you should on a stock sled, you should be able to hammer your turbo day after day and return home with a smile from ear to ear your wife will never understand. Ride hard and ride safe.
